Leadership is all about resources.

The ability to leverage energy, time and attention.

You are in a leadership position because you have a strong work ethic. Now, the game is about leveraging your efforts, and the efforts of those around you. This is at the core of any form of leadership.

The problem is we tend to be workaholics. And, workaholics tend to revert to defaults to get the job done in the face of relentless waves of pressure and workload:

  1. Work Harder (increase intensity)

  2. Work Longer (increase time)

  3. Get Others to Work Longer and Harder

All sorts of burnout, resentment and budget strain result from this.

There is a better way.

Are You Playing The Right One?

The 'Work Hard' mantra we all grew up with creates toxic work environments. This pushes us towards the Extinction Phase of performance. Meaning, if you don't change your ways you'll lose the client, your talent, your project, your job, or your business!

This is a state of LOW Return On Effort (ROE). Understanding the core skills of increasing ROE is the game we are playing as professionals and especially as leaders.

The Isolation Phase is overtly reliant on you, one or two stars, or a key account. It is flimsy, as well as fragile.

Working towards the Consolidation Phase is critical. But, be warned - invest in the wrong areas and a slide towards extinction can be swift and unforgiving. Get it right and this sets the foundation for serious increases in ROE.

Leading high ROE is to live in the Synchronisation Phase. One's cycles are set up. An operation rhythm is established. The plates are spinning. All my research and experience has led me to one assertion:
